abc - artists' books club: September - November 2009

abc : is a cross-disciplinary forum for makers of artists’ books and ephemera. It provides an opportunity to get together for focused critical and constructive dialogue, to contextualise work, explore ideas and to develop creative practice and theory.

OShO

On 8th October 2009
abc held OShO (official shelf opening) to celebrate a feast of source materials housed on a shelf - catalogues, artists' books, newsletters and other related archival material to facilitate research, reflection and historical contextualization of book arts practice.

The cake and champagne went down well, and everyone who came to the event joined the club, including students & staff!

Membership means opportunities to network inter/nationally, collaborate through creative buddying, exhibit work, wear the badge, receive the occasional inspirational pamphlet, enhance personal practice, make books/zines/ephemera, and also participate in critical dialogue.

more news on OShO..
thanks so much to
Celia Jackson for making a commemorative book for that event as she was unable to be there in person; sadly due to postal circumstances beyond her control it didn’t reach us by the 15th, as compensation here are some pictures of her tiny beautifully crafted book

Over the summer a few of us made work for the following brief:

"Disappears: a project to make something that's ephemeral in some way and whose theme is linked to this concept."

One response entitled
What Disapppears by Li Dui comprises 3 books in a box, with the following descriptor card enclosed

What Disappears
there is a philosophic idea, and one held by some physicists, that it is not possible for anything to disappear….that all things transmute into other things, are transformed into something else…..thus
something can never become nothing; it then follows it is not possible for anything to disappear…there may only ever be the illusion of no presence, or nothing; in other words nothing does not exist

A series of 3 one-of-a-kind bookettes explores this concept:
  • the incomplete soap box holds
  • white bookette 1
  • made by insects
  • orange bookette 2
  • the un-flowering
  • green bookette 3
  • a fragment of philosophic text
  • ...and the scent of its original contents
Our project was inspired by Tom Trusky's work, utilising 'Dissolvo' paper in a book, with his students at Boise State University in Idaho
