World Book Night project exhibition at Bower Ashton Library, UWE Bristol, UK, 1st – 30th April 2018
For 2018, the World Book Night United Artists issued an invitation to read and respond to the short story ‘Watching God’ in the collection Three Moments of an Explosion by China Miéville. There were many ways in which readers could respond to the text, through word or image, bookbinding, or even boat building.
The image and text submissions have been printed out and framed to display in the manner of the library and gallery scenes in the short story. They are on show in an exhibition from 1st – 30th April 2018 at Bower Ashton Library, Bristol. We’ll also be making our annual video and artist’s book to launch on World Book Night, 23rd April 2018.
The artist’s book will be published as a paperback ‘ur-text’ in keeping with the contents of the town’s library. The title of our book is Their Eyes Were Watching God – the book searched for but never found. It will be available through publish-on-demand if you wish to order a copy, published on 23rd April 2018. In December 2017 the Bodleian Libraries in Oxford opened Designing English, an exhibition of its medieval manuscripts – books made, copied and illustrated entirely by hand from the 800s to the early 1500s. To accompany it, the curator, Daniel Wakelin, the Jeremy Griffiths Professor of Medieval English Palaeography at Oxford, invited contemporary artists to take inspiration from these olde bokes. Forty artists, working in media from embroidery to video, attended workshops in Oxford last spring to see and handle medieval books. They and others received a design brief with a portfolio of images of those books, and with excerpts of medieval manuscripts. In response, fifty-six artists made new books – or alternatives to books – inspired by what they saw, for a competition and display in the Bodleian Library. There is now an opportunity to see an extended version of this exhibition at Bower Ashton Library from 19 April – 29 June 2018. I regret not having kept a diary before. There were brief episodes when I did. But nothing consistent. Now I find a degree of comfort in keeping a diary. It has become a consistent and reassuring part of what I do each day – I can’t imagine NOT keeping a diary. Furthermore, reading it tells me what I did on a particular day, a way of preserving memories of the past.
Each DAY PAGE entry is collaged onto a page, occasionally two pages of a book, usually a scrapbook – I also use large music stave books, ledgers, stamp albums, even a concertina drawing book – I particularly like using partially filled scrapbooks which I find here and there, adding my diary entry to the items already pasted on the page, enjoying the unpredictability of these juxtapositions, and the feeling of adding one layer of time to another.

ABC (artists’ books club)) will be showing books and prints at BALTIC Self-Publishing Artists’ Market, as it launches for the first time on Saturday 21 April. Around 50 artists, bookmakers, small press publishers, printmakers, artist’s groups and zine makers will be selling their work.
This expanded version of the annual Artists’ Book Market is a great opportunity to meet artists and browse a wide range of affordable artworks. Artist-led activities and performances will also accompany the special one-day event.
Artists’ books by ABC members will include works by: Kate Bernstein, Chrystal Cherniwchan, Miranda Harris (whose book Homesick is featured here), Gen Harrison, Linda Parr, Zelda Velika, Cathey Webb (image above), Corinne Welch, Elena Zeppou. 11.00-18.00 FREE Drop-in.

Our Summer Book Arts Institute runs over July-August 2018. We have classes from one-day Broadside Ballads, to Hybrid Printmaking, Book Structures with Guy Begbie, and Botanical Printmaking in the park with Bristol Print Collective.
All classes are held at Bower Ashton Studios, City Campus, UWE Bristol, UK. Come along to learn new skills and make new friends with books and printmaking.

ABC alumni have selected artists’ books to take to ‘turn the page’ this May. Works by featured artists will include: Linda Parr, Kate Bernstein, Corinne Welch, Gen Harrison, Elena Zeppou, Chrystal Cherniwchan and Cathey Webb.
The aim of turn the page artists’ book fair is simply to provide an exhibiting and selling platform for the book arts and to raise public awareness of this intriguing art form.
In early 2019 we will be moving to a new office on campus. Help us clear our bookshelves by filling yours up with some back issues!

Image: 759.9 LAR – 759.9 WILL Contemporary Painting – Rest of the World. Cathey Webb is making a series of artists’ books exploring Found Poetry by randomly choosing words from the books of specific bookshelves at Bower Ashton Library.
The project is inspired by Jeremy Dixon’s recent workshop at the Artists’ Book Club (ABC), and his exhibition ‘The Making 52 Books in 52 Weeks Challenge’ that was on show in the Library in February 2018.
ABC meets once a month to discuss and explore Artists’ Books. The group also works towards shared projects, exhibitions, and book fair events.
Cathey will be in the library for a short period most Thursdays, gathering information for the project. At the end of the project the books will be exhibited in the Library.
This exhibition is on tour as part of the ongoing al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Coalition projects. The online Inventory gallery was launched to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the bombing of al-Mutanabbi Street on 5th March 2012, for which project partners around the world held commemorative readings and events. Since then the Inventory has grown as artists’ books created for the project have arrived. The gallery pages show images and information for each of the 260 books completed for the project.
