Behind The Scenes
Patricia Collins
This book was produced with reference to a found object – a gardener’s diary of 1928 This diary was kept by B.P. Lonsdale of
Burton on Trent, Notts. It was given to me by an artist friend who knew that I had just given up my own gardening career.

When Jorg Seifert of Annaberg-Buchholz asked me to join him in a collaborative bookwork, I suggested this diary as the basis for
an investigation into the life of a jobbing gardener. Jorg translated several passages which we hope give an insight ‘behind the
scenes’ of the ‘English Garden’ and into something of the tedium of a gardener’s life. I took the photographs at various famous
gardens:- Kew, Hampton Court, Oxford Botanic Gardens and Sissinghurst.
