![]() Handbook For A Mobile Settlement Jorn Ebner Although the book depicts work developed through a residency in Grizedale and in response to the working environment of Grizedale Forest, showing forestry workers and the landscape, the book is not about Grizedale Forest. It was developed in relation to a sculptural work, i.e. Mobile Settlement, which in itself can be located in any environment as it refers to special construction as a mental / philosophical process. Mobile Settlement manifested in Grizedale, an action of which the photographs give a record. The book has two narrative strands, a photographic and a graphic one. The photographic images show Mobile Settlement in a real life context, moving from a scenic location towards forestry workers. On the last pages the images show the installation of a preceding structure: 6 Mooring Posts were placed in Grizedale Forest to form a geometric grid within a non-geometrical landscape and to act as reference points for Mobile Settlement. The graphic images depict the elements of Mobile Settlement (1 field/sheet, 12 architectural slot-in parts, 3 posts and lines) which can be used to create a minimum spatial set-up. The imagery also abstracts spatial relationships in general and refers to the forest locations of 6 Mooring Posts. The form of the book reflects its subject matter (Mobile Settlement’s sculptural use as a tool of reflection on the user’s immediate environment, in this case a working forest). As with the modular set of objects it can be taken apart as well.
