![]() Detour Christiane Baumgartner & Lucy Harrison Courtesy of domoBaal Gallery, London, UK Detour documents a series of walks taken by Christiane Baumgartner and Lucy Harrison as they attempt to find monuments and sights outlined in two Soviet-era guidebooks to Tallinn, Estonia, one in English and one in Russian (deciphered by Baumgartner as she attempted to remember her Russian lessons from her schooling in the former GDR). Where the monuments had disappeared, or where their correct positions could not be found from the descriptions in the books, their most suitable locations in the vicinity were chosen. The city described in the books was the same shape as the one found by the artists in 2004, but other than that was very different, and a gap could be seen between the city imagined by the pro-Soviet writers of the books and the city imagined by two foreign visitors. Detour includes events and recollections from the walks, including memories of previous visits to Tallinn which formed a part of their interpretation of the city.
