| Prompted by
pebbles that I have picked up on my travels over the years and
kept as talismans to the past. And by the knowledge that for generations,
and across cultures, stones have been used as markers on trails
and mountain tops to keep people from becoming lost. Or for other
purposes, the custom to place a small stone on a grave to indicate
a visit, it struck me that stones are frequently used as an aide-memoire.
