Russell, Simply Books, Ltd., Portland, Oregon, USA Today is the first day of my new life - my new creative life that is. After five years of being too busy for my own art work and not having a dedicated art studio, I finally have a new space. This series of four bookmarks for Bookmarks X was the perfect creative kickoff to celebrate my new studio space, which I moved into the same week Sarah's email about the bookmarks arrived. What a great inaugural project and creativity boost! Sightings are photographs taken from four of my limited edition artist books. I've often wondered why artists don't often revisit older bodies of works once a project is complete. These bookmarks are me thinking about how to do that. The photographs are all near and dear my heart and once they are inside a book and all of the books in the edition are bound do they really need to be done and hidden away inside the books? I'm thinking these days about how to repurpose older images is fresh new ways. These bookmarks are my first experiments at creative re-use. Laura Russell is a book artist and photographer in Portland, Oregon who caught the book arts bug 15 years ago during a slide show of handmade books from Shereen LaPlantz's how-to book titled Cover to Cover. Laura's limited edition artists' books are collected by numerous universities and museums.
