Armchair Traveller

I thought about what I was trying to communicate to the bookmark recipients and came up with the concept of the bookmark artist as an "armchair traveller" - someone who has taken the time and energy to make individual artworks in order to see them sent out into the world.

I wrote some text to describe this concept and printed it in postcard format for one side of the bookmark. To complete the postcard look, I included stamps from a 1960s stamp collector's album. The paper I used for the Bookmarks was a combination of rusted paper and handmade paper made during a previous project.

On the front side of the bookmark I have stamped my design of the flying armchair. Inspired by a recent trip to the Carnarvon Gorge and the amazing Aboriginal art you can see on cave walls there, I stencilled part of a map of Australia.

I am hoping people will email me their own stories. Simple stories, of their country, their culture, the food, the architecture. The stories will form the basis of an Artist Book I am making for the Noosa Regional Gallery Artist Book exhibition in September this year.

My idea of the armchair traveller came about because I am currently unable to travel, yet am constantly drawn by the desire for the mind-expanding experience it can provide. I'm hoping to travel vicariously through those I hear from and use their stories to put some sparkle into my work!

Thanks, happy travels!
