| I find that one of my hurdles
in getting through a book (at any great speed) these days, has something
to do with my mind tending to wander from the task in hand. The humble doodle seems to visually represent this act of mind wandering, as lines and patterns grow and engulf the reverse of the envelope or utility bill while we are on the telephone, sitting in a lecture or in a boring meeting. These bookmarks record the growth of a common doodle of mine, from one 'cell' to one hundred, on the corresponding edition number. They are 'daydream drawings' that in this instance are created using a very formal numbering process, causing me to have concentrated hard on the process instead of aimlessly putting pen to paper. I would encourage any recipient of these bookmarks to add to the doodle at any opportunity where their concentration lapses from the book they are reading. Apart from drawing on the back of envelopes and staring at the ceiling, I am a Book Artist and Illustrator working in Bristol. I work with print and bookbinding and have worked recently on commissions for charities and small businesses designing packaging, logos and stationary I also run workshops for children and adults. I exhibit at Artists' Book fairs and will have books exhibited at the Arnolfini Bookshop, in November and December 2006. website : www.tortie.co.uk email : mail@tortie.co.uk back |
