I often work from the memory of a particular place. The starting point for this work was a research trip to Japan. I am interested in the medative quality of the raked gravel in Zen Gardens, these inspired compositions of repeatedly drawn or dribbled lines of paint, juxtaposed with areas of empty paper. The work foregrounds the accidental freedom that occurs within a controlled process. This can be paint that runs into itself or the point that an etching plate bites right through, creating an element of surprise that could not be anticipated. This reflects the Japanese concept of  “washi sabi”. I am interested in the inherent qualities of each material used: the paperiness of paper, the painterliness of paint, often asking myself how much (or little) intervention is needed to realise the piece.

My work explores the point that concept and process meet. Memory serves as both conceptual inspiration and a metaphor for process in this work, which defines drawing as an act of touch where one material “imprints” onto another.
