![]() Julie Caves London, England UK I paint, make my artists' books and plan my interventions out of my light-filled studio at the Chocolate Factory N16 in North East London. My abstract work begins with colour, my figurative work tries to puzzle out the different way I see everything, my artists' books are often visual lists or documentation or ideas that need to have the parts follow in a sequence, my interventions try to make contact with other humans and my videos are odd self portraits. I began my art studies in California in 1989, studied art in Spain, received my BFA in Studio Art (Sculpture and Printmaking) in Texas, and my MA in Bookarts from Camberwell College of Arts in London. I was in my first juried painting show in 1990 and have participated in exhibitions in the US, Spain, Korea, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and the UK. I have artists’ books in a number of public collections including the Tate Britain Special Collection. Trying my best to make contact with humanity, I make books that offer a moment of cheerful confusion, books that celebrate the beauty of the so-called ordinary, books made of groupings and lists, cataloguing the things and places we think we know, books that offer a new look at things you see every day. (Also, the occasional faltering attempt at communication about big ideas.) I like that a book is a piece of art you can hold and look at all by yourself. I think that an artists’ book that is about a little silly thing that is a bit interesting can be just as fulfilling as one about big ideas or complex executions. The best artists’ books are probably a bit of both: silly or cheerful or funny on the surface but making you think about something more meaningful. I like art that you want to look at over and over again, seeing something new each time, or that has such a powerful idea that it changes you a little, or that causes an emotional reaction. When I create art I lose myself in it and find parts of myself I don’t use in daily life. I hope that viewers can get a flicker, a glimpse of the less-used parts of themselves.
