These bookmarks are maps that show the locations of photographed manhole covers that comprise an artists’ book
project called “City Shields.” The manhole covers that are attached to the bookmarks are the overprints from my first
7 volumes of this project.
“City Shields” started in the fall of 1999 when I was looking down at a manhole cover on holiday in Scotland with my
husband, I noticed how different the manhole covers were from those back home in Canada. I continued during my
trip to look down at the entryways to the world beneath. I took many photos and built quite a collection.
Since that trip I have created 21 volumes of photographic documentation that takes the viewer on a walking journey
through the urban streets of various Canadian, Scottish, and American cities. “City Shields” consists of souvenirs
of traveled cities around the world using manhole covers to depict exploration of geographical locations along my
