Book artist (Sophie Artemis) for 15 years I am now working on a series of drawings which explore flowers as archetypes
that are culturally bound, sometimes nostalgic and genre-specific. The pencil drawings on Anaglypta wallpaper or lacey
paper doilies describe observed flowers drawn on to the embossed and cut-out flowers of the manufactured surface.
For the bookmarks project I have made fragment drawings: lace-edged slips with a sweep of faded violets: The edge of
a dish or the corner of a handkerchief flowers. These bookmarks are keepsakes, place markers, memory joggers and
often forgotten objects once the book has been read. Forgotten they are left between chapters, the narrative folded
around the object; remembered they are carried on to the next book and the next journey.
