Poetry books: Reading Books
25 January - 24 March 2007

Perhaps we should have called this a selection of ‘poetic’ books rather than simply poetry books. The books on show have been selected as a themed exhibition to accompany both poëzie week in Enschede; National Poetry Day in The Netherlands and National Book Week in The Netherlands, which all occur over this period. Students on the Poetry course at AKI (ArtEz) in Enschede, will be reading poems they have written, at the exhibition opening on 25th January.

The books in the exhibition are from the collection at CFPR, all of which have been chosen for their variety of texts, elements of poetry, experimental type and poetic imagery, in the hope that they may inspire your imagination.

Thomas A. Clark’s beautifully written pieces Evening and Morning; Twenty Blessings; In Praise of Walking and A Book Of Deer are classic poetic works from the Moschatel Press imprint. We also have subliminally altered poems: Sonnet 154 by William Shakespeare (FAHRENHEIT 451, OR HOW TO MAKE A BOOK BOMB, AUTHOR UNKNOWN), by Matt Lumby a wonderfully subversive set of instructions hidden inside a seemingly innocuous love sonnet.

John Bently’s Songs From the Shandy Valley; Paperback; Twenty Household Objects, Thirty People and One Hundred Books represent a very small portion of Liver and Lights publishing works from the last 22 years (see www.bookarts.uwe.ac.uk/jbliver.htm for a short history and archive images). Specimens; by playback tape and singinging composition by Colin Sackett are just three examples of his brilliantly considered text works exploring the English language and landscape.

Journey to the Centre by Katherina Manolessou and Otto, was inspired by Jules Verne's Journey to the Centre of the Earth, screenprinted in an edition of 100, as a psychedelic voyage, written and illustrated by Manolessou and Otto (see www.ottobooks.co.uk). Mo Kramer – A few Lines for Paul Klee – is a small piece from the boxed installation: The Lost Life and Works of Mo Kramer (1920-1993), Meir Agassi, 1993. The poem was written by Agassi in the assumed character of his fictitious artist Mo Kramer.

Where Have You Been? is a recent addition to the collection from the new artists’ books and poetry publishing venture ignition books. Visit their website for images and information on their publishing projects www.ignition.ie
