In October we hosted a free, one-day public symposium on artists’ books in Bristol. This was funded by a UWE Bristol Research Collaboration Fund, award for ‘Artists’ Books in Australia and Brazil – looking to the past to read into the future’.

Sarah’s artist’s book, Read to Me is the result of a collaboration with a psychometric reader, telling stories to objects which were then ‘read’ back. The book and a selection of the objects read to (and from) are now touring in an exhibition that is visiting venues in the UK and USA. The first venue was Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY, USA, which returned the original idea to the place of its inspiration. The current venue is Winchester School of Art Library, UK, 15th November – 20th December 2018. You can read more about the project here.
The new issue of The Blue Notebook journal for artists’ books is guest edited by Caren Florance, artist and recent 2018 Critic-in-Residence at ANCA Gallery in Canberra (Australian National Capital Artists). This issue focuses on Caren’s PhD project, Collaborative Materiality: poets/ poetry/ letterpress/ artist books. Caren invited writers and artists to publish papers associated with the 2017 University of Canberra symposium on Poetry and the Artist Book. Contributors include: Susan Wood, Caren Florance and Marian Crawford plus artists’ pages and interventions by Monica Carroll, Nicci Haynes and Paul Uhlmann. A selection of artists’ books from the archive at the Centre for Fine Print Research is on display at Hauser & Wirth Somerset. They form part of a Book Lab display to accompany the Takesada Matsutani – drop in time exhibition which is on show until 1st January 2019.

Our MA Multidisciplinary Printmaking students and friends have been busy editioning miniature prints for their annual fundraiser exhibition from 1st – 31st December 2018.
A selection of 30 prints is now available for sale at £18 each, at Arnolfini Bookshop, 16 Narrow Quay, Bristol. These beautiful prints range from editions in gold foil blocking, to letterpress, screenprint and etching, or even hand printed feathers, as shown here in the miniprint by Ru Broadway.

We are pleased to announce the dates for the 7th Bristol Artist’s Book Event at Arnolfini: Saturday 30th March and Sunday 31st March 2019 , 11am – 6pm Saturday and 11am – 5pm Sunday. BABE at Arnolfini will take place over the ground and first floor galleries and auditorium space of Arnolfini. Arnolfini is one of Europe’s leading centres for the contemporary arts and this is a great opportunity to view and buy artists’ books from the attending artists and publishers.
BABE at Arnolfini is organised by Arnolfini in collaboration with the Centre for Fine Print Research at UWE Bristol and the Making Books Research Centre, Bath School of Art & Design at Bath Spa University.
We have artists and publishers coming to Bristol from all over the UK, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Poland and Sweden to showcase their books. WBN United Artists have set the book for 2019. If you wish to join us and contribute, please get reading… The text we are responding to is Under Milk Wood: a play for voices, by Dylan Thomas. We are asking readers to select their favourite 10 words from the text and email them to us.
We will use these words as part of a collaboratively printed broadside news-sheet, a copy of which will be sent to every contributor. We’ll also be making our annual video to launch on World Book Night, 23rd April 2019. The image shown here is a detail from the 1961 edition illustrated by Brian Rees. The deadline for submissions to the collaborative broadside is 1st March 2019.

This exhibition is on tour as part of the ongoing al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Coalition projects. The online Inventory gallery was launched to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the bombing of al-Mutanabbi Street on 5th March 2012, for which project partners around the world held commemorative readings and events. Since then the Inventory has grown as artists’ books created for the project have arrived. The gallery pages show images and information for each of the 260 books completed for the project.
