| Exhibition in the Artists' Books Study
Area at the Library School of Art, Media and Design, UWE Bristol: Heidy Hollemweguer Campos, Peruvian Artists’ Books 10th July - 16th August 2006 For me a book is something unique, which involves the spectator in its world and space, and leaves in him a mystery to know what is inside. A book in a dusty library is a dead book. A book which is not accessible to the public is a book that agonises. A book communicates. A book inveigles. A book needs a reader, but one who would like to be in the subject, to bathe in the content of its pages. An anxious reader who wants to discover what is inside the book. The significance of the artwork is enhanced not by a frame or a display box, but in the participation of the spectators.
To be closer to the artwork is the purpose. And that is what it is important in my artwork. The theme I use is the same since 1997: “The Love of God to the humanity” A love which never changes, Love of the impossible. That love is for everyone who would like to receive it. The idea to touch the books and to move their pages, it is also related with the idea of God’s love, because his love is always accessible to everyone. That shows us how near he is to us. For years I have been working in Printmaking. This has allowed me to search for new techniques, but at the same time it has given me another way to see it. That is to say, not in a two-dimensional art and exhibited under a frame as the norm, but to play with it and in that way making it accessible to anyone. My intentions have been to explore the possibilities of interaction with the spectator within printmaking and drawing, making the work not only observational but also that involves participation. My strong desire to experiment has moved me into the idea of interaction. A significant part of my work is the interaction between the work of art and the spectator. I try and break down the barriers and distance between the work and the viewer. The public/ spectators can interact with my work, touching it, changing its position, playing with it in the way that a book offers and adds physical opportunity to the work.
The lives expressed in my books are born from my heart, experience and knowledge. The written text, the drawings, the use of different kind of frames, the connection with the biblical themes, give an important meaning to the work which is not represented in classical religious iconography, are all of them giving birth to the actual and yet to come artists’ book. Heidy Hollemweguer Campos obtained a Degree in Fine Art at the Escuela Nacional Superior Autónoma de Bellas Artes del Peru, followed by an MA in Fine Art at the University of Gloucestershire, UK. She has now completed a Bachelor in Education at the Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola and teaches art at the Lord Byron School, Lima. Some recent exhibitions include: “Continuamente es moverse”, UNMSM, Lima, and “Book Art”, Artetica, Roma, Italy in 2006. back |
