All welcome. UWE's annual Art, Design and Media Degree Show takes place at the Bower Ashton Campus and Spike Island, an international contemporary art centre on Bristol's harbourside. This year MA Fine Art will show at the Bristol Diving School for the first time. MA Multi-disciplinary Printmaking student Angie Butler has been awarded this year’s Agassi Book Arts Prize 2011 by the Centre for Fine Print Research 'I like to uncover the secret good deeds that ordinary people do; making visual stories that would otherwise lay hidden, and celebrate the charm and beauty I see in that which can easily be over looked. My working methodology often requires some form of participation from other parties. I usually alight on a visual, story or text, a circumstance or a particular space that I find intriguing. Being particularly drawn to nostalgic places, items and events, I and attempt to document, and display them, not only as preservation of a particular way of life, reflection of thought, or aesthetic judgment: but also conceptually - combining them to imply new meanings and readings of seemingly mundane, hobbyist or everyday activities. A celebration of ordinary events can then lead to them being perceived as extraordinary. Over the past eighteen months I have been Artist-In-Residence at Miss Carol a small traditional Hair Stylists in Bristol. This has led me to make a variety of book-based work evidencing the activities of local people and their surroundings. Among them, a Miss Carol Calendar, featuring June’s last year of window displays before her retirement. Mrs. Derrick’s Blankets: a handmade book, celebrating the pastime of a 90 year old lady who has been crocheting blankets for her local Dogs & Cats home for over thirty years. Also, Behind The Shop Window: My Life with Miss Carol - a book documenting the whole residency from Staff New Year Motto Posters, to a window display of Clients’ We Love Our Pets Postcards - there was never a dull moment in a place full of vibrant characters, conversation and masses of hairspray. All works produced are available through www.petgalerie.co.uk From Fri 10 - Thurs 16 June I will be showing all the work listed above and a whole lot more, in a special ‘front room’ installation space at the MA Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking Show at UWE Bristol Kennel Lodge Road Bristol BS3 2JT UK Tea will be served daily at 3pm in my space, by tea trolley.'
