| Natalie McGrorty - Artists’ Books
Intern at CFPR I am currently studying Drawing and Applied Arts at the University of the West of England (UWE). Having initially trained in jewellery design, my work subsequently moved into the 2-dimensional realm when I was introduced to enamel, and enjoyed the varied mark making possibilities and printmaking techniques of this medium. Since commencing the Drawing and Applied Arts programme, I have been reacquainted with printmaking once more, in particular with regard to the wonderful world of artists’ books. In my own practice I enjoy using printmaking techniques, bookbinding, paper/laser cutting and stitch and increasingly I am making artists’ books for book fairs and exhibitions. I love the way in which book arts allow for the marriage of image and narrative in such an inventive and often whimsical fashion. The attention to detail and careful consideration given to every aspect of the book-works, from the size and format to the materials used, appeals greatly to my sensibilities and to the way in which I like to work. Due to the presence of the Centre for Fine Print Research at UWE, I have been involved in a number of Book Arts projects and conferences organised by Sarah Bodman and Tom Sowden. This has further fuelled my love of this area of work and I feel inspired to continue in this direction. This internship is a wonderful opportunity for me to broaden my knowledge and understanding of this field. Natalie McGrorty, October 2009 |
