Artists’ Talks on Artists’ Books – archive ready for viewing
One-Day Symposium at Winchester School of Art,
A one-day symposium at Winchester School of Art
co-hosted by the Centre for Fine Print Research, UWE, Bristol &
Winchester School of Art Library, University of Southampton.

Friday 13th July 2007
80 people attended this event for artists to find out more about ways in which they could work collectively and independently to publish their books.

Artists’ Talks on Artists’ Books showed artists’ ideas behind making, collaborating, publishing, exhibiting and education in book arts. The symposium included a special focus on John Bently's 23 years of publishing and performance as the Liver and Lights Scriptorium.

Talks, images and events from the day have been archived for viewing and download. You can read/view the talks or listen to them as podcasts from the exhibitions and events pages, where you can also watch a 10 minute video clip of the Afterabbit performance with participants from the workshops

You can view the online archive by visiting our exhibitions page, or by clicking here.

Artists’ Books Creative Production and Marketing
2nd Edition 2007
(ISBN 10) 0-9547025-7-3 (ISBN 13) 978-0-9547025-7-1

The new, updated second edition is now available as a free download 3.5 MB PDF file, 67 pages. The first edition of this guide in 2005, was the result of our AHRC supported project which investigated production and marketing issues for book artists. Since 2005, we have had responses and information from artists and purchasers, and developments have taken place within the field of artists’ books. The second edition has been re-written to include new information gained since 2005.

We have interviewed artists about producing and distributing their work, and the importance of artist’s book fairs and events for building relationships with purchasers and other artists; curators, collectors (both institutional and private) bookshop and gallery workers and dealers.

This edition also includes 28 Book Artist Case Studies which can be used as reference for newer artists and students wanting to find out more about producing and marketing their artists’ books. We selected a range of artists with 2 – 30+ years experience of making and marketing artists’ books, zines, editions and unique books and asked them to share their working practices and experiences of book fairs, interaction with collections and purchasers, and any problems and advice.

We have updated the lists of collections, book fairs, places to buy and sell artists’ books, reference reading and websites; which should help artists to find out about available opportunities, marketing ideas and supporting networks.

Many thanks to all the artists, collectors, publishers and contributors who responded to our requests for information for both editions, particularly those who have contacted us in response to the first edition, and those who have contributed extensively with their experiences through the case studies and interviews. We hope you will find this guide helpful in promoting your own artists’ books.

rich and strange: altered books project : latest
The call for participants in rich and strange altered books is now closed: all books have been chosen and posted off to artists in South Africa, Italy, Brazil, Denmark, Vermont… and, of course, Bristol, Edinburgh, London, Anglesey – in fact, all over the UK and the world! I’m delighted to say that Newport Central Library, as well as hosting one of the rich and strange exhibitions, has agreed to catalogue all books submitted and make them available for withdrawal by members of the public, on an inter-library loan basis if necessary. I will be running altered book workshops for children with another book artist, Becky Adams, to take place over the summer and also during the exhibition in October; we’ll be using library discards to make paper and altered bookworks too.

The rich and strange website will be up and running soon (details to follow), where I’ll be posting updates, images and other bits and pieces. If anyone would like details of future book projects just email me on celia.jackson@newport.ac.uk and I’ll keep you informed.

Finally: BIG THANKS to everyone who’s taking part in rich and strange altered books, everyone who wanted to but didn’t make it in time, and Sarah for helping to make it all happen!

Celia Jackson
