Book selected: Painting with Acrylic Colours, by Alwyn Crawshaw
New title: An unfolding story…
I chose a book that was a practical, how-to-do-it manual on painting. I wanted to give it another dimension by fusing it with one of the great classics on the use of colour, Johannes Itten’s colour system in his book 'The art of colour'.
Since the original was a practical manual I wanted to keep it whole and comprehensible yet contain it within the theory of colour. For this reason the original pages of the book are filed in pockets of Itten’s colour squares.
Finally I used the dynamics of the folding to allow the coloured squares to dance as it is opened since painting is after all about the movement of colour across the canvas.
