Book selected: Catalogue of Foreign Paintings II: 1800 to 1900, by CM Kauffmann, V&A.
New title: Abridged Too Far
The main thing that struck me about the catalogue was that the tiny black and white illustrations of the paintings revealed practically no information. The dullness of them actually discouraged the viewer from reading either the title or the text.
I selected the main elements of the paintings in pen and ink line, reversed some of them and in others added items that were not visible in the reproduction but suggested in the title.
I wished to maintain the sense of meaninglessness in the book whilst creating enough slightly humorous curiosity in the viewer to invite at least some research reading.
