Book selected: Dai Country, Short stories by Alun Richards
I wanted to keep the sequence that was already integral to the book as these were short stories. Each story seemed to relate to the next and there seemed to be threads that linked the stories together. I wanted to somehow still keep the message of the book but to alter it somehow. I decided to précis each story in three words or less (!) and then stuck the pages of the individual stories together .It was then that I embarked on cutting out the words, so the words themselves become the text, this was very labour intensive and painful on fingers, especially index and thumb!
The finished piece has a 3D quality that I have recorded with the camera. The pages are particularly striking when placed in strong sunlight as the shadows interplay with the shapes of the words and the original text.
I have also produced a small poster with 6 images using the book as source that reflect different aspects of this altered book.
