On 23/04/15, we, the WBN United Artists made our annual World Book Night tribute. This year we chose Stephen King’s magnificent horror novel The Shining. We received brilliant entries from Europe and the USA for our collaborative artist’s book and the video that we filmed on the night of 23rd April. Our open call asked contributors to read the book and make a miniature model of anything in it.
Thanks to all the contributors for their beautiful models. We matched the models to text excerpts from the New English Library paperback edition of Stephen King’s The Shining, published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1993. The novel was first published in 1977.
Model makers: Mette-Sophie D. Ambeck, Craig Atkinson, Sarah Bodman, Angie Butler, Si Butler, Nancy Campbell, Anna Cooper, Jeremy Dixon, Lilla Duignan, Sara Elgerot/Rare Autumn, Su Fahy, Hazel Grainger, Charlotte Hall, Paul Laidler, Pauline Lamont-Fisher, Gwen Simpson, Simon Smith, Tom Sowden, Angela Thames, Elisabeth Tonnard, Stephanie Turnbull, Corinne Welch, Linda Williams, Philippa Wood, Clare Wyatt.
Special thanks to Si Butler, for building the moving turntable set, to Angie Butler for help with decorating and Angie and Lilla Duignan for frantic gathering and passing on of models in pairs! Thank you also to Si Butler for the brilliant music composition and to Si and Simon Smith for playing their wonderful live soundtrack as Tom filmed, and to Paul Laidler for photographing all the models for this archive and the artist’s book, which we will send out to contributors at the end of May.
