Biblioteka Narodowa (National Library), Warsaw, Poland
We travelled by train from Kielce to Warsaw to meet with Alicja Slowikowska (curator of numerous artists’ books exhibitions and founder of http://bookart.pl and Joanna Stokowska (paper artist) who kindly translated our conversations, at the Biblioteka Narodowa (National Library) where Slowikowska has her office.
Alicja Slowikowska is the curator of the Contemporary Polish Book Art exhibition series, which has been running since 1994.
For the 10th anniversary in 2004, she organised 80 exhibitions in Poland, USA, Germany, Israel, The Netherlands, Bulgaria, Sweden, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Finland and took part in international book fairs in Leipzig, Frankfurt, Jerusalem, Warsaw, New York and Turku, Finland.
The Book Art exhibitions include invited artists and open calls; there are no limitations on what can be included under the Book Art umbrella. Both established and younger artists are encouraged to participate and show objects, illustrations, fine press books, authors’ books, limited editions, artists’ books and book installations.
You can view a few examples of Polish book artists from the bookart.pl website here – please also see the website at http://bookart.pl as it has a wealth of information on the Contemporary Polish Book Art project, exhibitions and artists.
