Zero Waste, an exhibition of artists’ books

20th September – 20th October 2019

UWE, Bristol, Bower Ashton Library, UK, 20th September – 20th October 2019
Estonian Academy of Arts Library, Tallinn, Estonia, November 2019 – February 2020

Zero Waste alludes to responsible lifestyles, ending waste and a concern for the future of the planet. The exhibition’s artworks not only feature themes related to pollution and nature conservation, but also place equal importance on valuing human relationships.

Last spring, the second-year students studying graphic arts at the Estonian Academy of the Arts (Mark Hiir, Brit Kikas, Maria Izabella Lehtsaar, and Liis-Marleen Verilaskja) invited interested members of the Artist’s Book Club from the Centre for Fine Print Research in Bristol, England to collaborate on the theme of ‘Zero Waste’. The topic was decided on during a joint session and the main issue was: What common denominator would most engage the students?

Seven books were specially created for the exhibition and they are supplemented by artists’ books from the collection of the Department of Graphic Arts at the Estonian Academy of Arts. The collection was started in 2009 and is comprised primarily of the spring semester projects of second-year students. The Academy’s collaborative graphic art and graphic design project from 2016 is included in the Zero Waste exhibition. The theme of the project was food – something that people suffer a shortage of in many countries, but which is senselessly wasted in many others. The exhibition also includes four books, which were produced by students as collaborative projects.

The books from 2019 are executed primarily using traditional graphic art techniques – linocut, relief printing, typesetting, etching as well as screen printing. The course is supervised by Eve Kask and Lennart Mänd (Accessory and Binding Design), who have collaborated for over 20 years.

The following students from the Department of Graphic Art participated in the exhibition: Pille Alasi, Valentin Alizer (France), Kristiina Avel, Emilia Furs, Mark Hiir, Karin Ird, Brit Kikas, Margus Kontus, Maria Izabella Lehtsaar, Ott Lemsaar, Siim Lootus, Liina Loper, Ann Pajuväli, Anette-Lis Seppel, Liis-Marleen Verilaskja; as did the following students from the Department of Graphic Design under the supervision of Monika Maidre: Meeri Kabur, Kristjan Kesküla, Anita Kossareva, Liisi Lasn, Arvi Piir, Anni Mari Rohumäe, Martis Roosimaa, Oskar Tikka, Tuuli Velling, Linda Vainomäe, Ulla Väljaste.

Artists’ books from UWE Bristol in this exhibition are by Beatriz Leonardo, Niamh Fahy, Zelda Velika, Chrystal Cherniwchan & Sarah Bodman, Stephen Fowler, Gen Harrison. They are supplemented by artists’ books from the Centre for Fine Print Research’s Archive, including books by: Daniel Lehan, Julie Johnstone, Jeremy Dixon, Corinne Welch, Angie Butler, Hazel Grainger, Simon Kentgens, Stephen Spurrier, Imi Maufe, Rebecca Weeks, Sarah Nicholls, Eric Watier, Mark Pawson, EAK Press.
