These bookmarks are slices of altered photo etchings. The full image was taken in the Chernobyl exclusion zone. The process has resulted in a print that resembles a Xerox copy - pixellated and a bit rubbish. The prints were then altered with a woodcut and a wooden stamp so that each bookmark becomes an individual piece.
The full image is of a found dolly laying amongst faded plastic flowers on a leafy pathway - I have no doubt that it had been staged for dramatic effect. This fakery appeals, as it is like a memory being changed or reconstructed by someone else retelling their version of it. This is what happens with stories, they mean something slightly different to everyone who reads, or tells them.
