![]() Andrea Hill UK Tales of A Grandfather The book that I have altered was chosen because the title appealed to me: Tales of A Grandfather. As I never knew my grandfather - he died before I was born - I wanted to make a book relating to him. There is only one family photograph of him - dressed in his army uniform; he served in the Artillery during the First World War - and I have used a copy of this in my altered book. When I received the book to alter from the Regenerator project's discarded books, I thought it was beautiful, with its marbled end papers, and didn't want to destroy them, so they became a feature of the altered book. The text, title, Tales of A Grandfather were cut out and echoed over the page as I only have very few fragmented tales of my grandfather, he was invalided out of the army, he lost his wife whilst young so my mother and her brothers and sisters were brought up by their grandmother. My grandfather was a gardener who enjoyed tending plants, a love passed on to my mother, myself, and all the family. I used symbolic materials in the making of the altered book, scrim and plaster of Paris, used for fractured bones, and wax, traditionally used for sealing letters and secrets… |
