History of the Motor Car
I chose this heavy and comprehensive book because I have little or no interest in motor cars.

Like a lot of his generation, my father is the one who knew about and therefore could 'fix' whatever problems arose with the family car. As a natural consequence, it nearly always involved a lot of oil and grease being transferred into the house from the garage via his shoes, or as handprints on door handles, etc. There were also numerous oily rags seemingly just left lying about as he discarded them.

So it seemed inevitable to me that in the maintenance of even the most glamorous or sophisticated of motor cars (even though our family car could never be described in those terms) the use of an oily rag has always been fundamental.
