![]() Elaine Knight UK Time Burns Us Original book title: Bridget Jones Diary by Helen Fielding 'Every act of creation is first of all an act of destruction.' Pablo Picasso. This discarded 1997 paperback edition of Bridget Jones Diary was certainly showing its age and the pages were turning yellow. As a diary is a record of the passing of time, how apt that the passage of time was already changing this book. The yellowing pages were oxidising, slowly burning in fact and being consumed by Time. The concept of Time burning us previously inspired me to use a laser cutter to create the image of a clock face with the words “time burns us” written across it as part of a mixed media artwork. I thought it would be perfect for this altered book so I made several photocopies of this image, partially burned them by hand and pasted them into the book. Having chosen to use the transformative element of fire I continued to creatively burn through some of the pages. This resulted in certain words being revealed for example: “Disintegration”, “unexplained mystery”, “beginnings”, “0”. Are not both sperm and ovum sacrificed and transformed to form new life? elaineknight93@hotmail.com www.art4now.webs.com |
