Infestation
Original book title: Sir Walter Scott's A Life of Napoleon Buonaparte
I was attracted by the age of the book and the author as I have altered an old Walter Scott book before. The subject also interested me as it reminded me of my collection of lead soldiers. My work normally deals with landscape and habitat and I have been making a set of over 100 rubber stamps of British beetles for an exhibition later next year. It struck me that the serried ranks of my beetle collection suggested the battle lines of a Napoleonic Army so I set about decorating each page with an infestation of insects. Each page is an improvisation, each chapter a variation on a visual theme.
