Sculpture in Wood
Original book title: Sculpture in Wood by Edward Norman
Using a very literal play on the title of the book, I have taken the original book form and broken it up, tearing
the pages into strips which have been re-sewn to create a new book structure - with some of the information
still accessible, though now useless as a functional book as the detail and coherence of the printed content
is lost. The torn edges of the paper now sewn into a thicker book block give a soft, organic edge- reminiscent
of the underside of a fungus or mushroom which might possibly be found growing on or inside of a tree. The
altered book could be looked at as a return of the paper to its original source, packed in layers, and wedged
into a piece of hardwood. Both organic and minimal in its form, the book is concerned with the nature of paper
and wood as materials, so different in appearance and yet very much the same in essence.
