CA, USA, March 2012 World of Books is inspired by the exhibition title, An Inventory of Al-Mutanabbi Street, the idea being to symbolically replace the books lost in the bombing. I sent a request to friends and colleagues around the world, inviting them to send me a photo of a bookshelf. I pictured making a book that would reconstruct an international library of bookshelves, gathered from friends and colleagues. The book consists of 62 photographs which were sent to me on-line, from places as diverse as Azerbaijan and Massachusetts. Many came from my colleagues in the artists' books field. The pictures communicate a deep attachment to books, and represent our ability to exchange information freely and without censorship. Dimensions: 9” x 7” x 1 1/8” The book is housed in an archival box that is 8” x 10” x 1.5” Medium: Archival ink-jet printing on acid free paper. Coptic binding, linen board covers with title stamped in red foil. 78 pages First Edition of 5 hand bound copies printed at Electric Works, San Francisco, CA. Second Edition of 6 non-archival copies produced by Edition One, Berkeley, CA. An on-demand version is also planned for a later date. Sas Colby studied at Rhode Island School of Design and has been teaching and exhibiting her mixed media artwork for more than forty years. Her work is included in collections at The Bibliotheque National, Paris; The National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; The Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC, and many others. A survey exhibition, Sas Colby: Twenty Years of Book Thinking, travelled to three locations in the US in 1995. Colby's art is often informed by international travel and her humanitarian concerns.
