May 5, 2012. That Day On Al Mutanabbi Street is a collection of my digital images and poetry on various papers. It is printed in English using Lithos Pro, and in Arabic the font is Baghdad. 4 inches high by 6 inches wide. Digital Images on Various Papers. I am very grateful for the generous help of Ansa Ahmed and translation by Hawazen Nehfawi. My work is primarily as a painter and printmaker, but over the years I have made several artist's books. These have always been focused on subjects dear to my heart - a book illustrating the English word, today, in American Sign Language, an illustrated journal documenting the death of a dear cousin, a book of paintings, among others. In recent years, my paintings have all been on paper. I find the tooth of the various surfaces very pleasing to brush, print and draw on, so to move back an forth between all three forms of my work using the same foundation seems just perfect for me. What could appear more peaceful, more innocent than a street of bookshops? People on the street and in the shops; they are browsing, having their tea, haggling about a price, greeting a friend or perhaps merely taking a shortcut to another street. An explosion! When it is over, nothing is ever the same again. Who presumes to destroy the lives of others?
