Bellingham, WA, USA; Completed October 12, 2011 When invited to participate in this project I “girded up my loins” and reopened the painful Iraq-theme artist's book door. This is the first of three editions on Al Mutanabbi Street. This first book is a meditation upon the book as container, as cultural artifact, as ideas in corporeal form. There are many landscapes explored between the non-linear narrative and the images of slowly decaying books. It calls out the names of those killed on Mutanabbi Street as well as the many journalists who have also sacrificed themselves for the revealing the truth about Iraq. Elsi Vassdal Ellis creates books in a well-equipped studio outside Bellingham on 20. Born in Fallon, Nevada, she spent her formative years in Iowa City, Iowa, before settling down in the Pacific Northwest. Since 1983 she has produced over 95 editions and 120 unique books. Her work is permanently housed in many collections including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry, Grabhorn Collection in the San Francisco Public Library, and Arts of the Book Collection in the Yale University Library.
