Reading Rooms for Al-Mutanabbi Street, 2012
Margaret Cooter, UK
Margaret Cooter, London,
UK, December 2012
Bare walls and empty pages. Bare walls in rooms that are empty of
books: rooms without windows. Empty pages in books that have not
been written, books that cannot be read: whose riches are unknown.
This set of rooms can be set out in various configurations - a street,
a village - or tipped over and stretched out, becoming a bridge
over an invisible river.
9 x 13 cm. Graphite, wax, and ink on paper; double accordion fold
structure, display format variable; band for holding book closed.
Margaret Cooter's books relate to personal and cultural memory.
They are informed by her career in libraries and publishing and
her involvement in textile art. After many years working as a medical
editor, she obtained an MA in Book Arts from University of the Arts,
London, in 2012.
