Berlin, Germany, 2013 With my book I want to connect Berlin and Baghdad. Al-Mutanabbi Street is the centre of bookselling in Baghdad, where 2007 the bomb attack happened. I dedicate my book to the memory of the victims of the bomb attack. My idea for the book was on the one hand to create a specific relation to the bookselling street in Baghdad and on the other hand to be understood by as many people as possible regardless of the language they speak. The use of the name of this famous Iraqi poet as a name for the street presented the opportunity to use the form of leporello fold. I chose a vivid background befitting the life of al-Mutanabbi Street. It was printed as a lithographic print with a hand press. The other parts are made by using letterpress printing. The main design elements are the big red letters forming the name of al-Mutanabbi. Above and below that I point out what is special about this street in Baghdad: the buying, selling and trading of books. The writers from all over the world chosen by me to correspond to the respective letters are supposed to remind the viewer of the book of this artist. They are alive here for all of the writers that remain unnamed. Mein Buch soll eine Brücke schlagen zwischen Berlin und Bagdad, dem lebendigen Bücherhandel dort in der Al-Mutanabbi Straße, und soll zugleich der Opfer des Bombenattentats von 2007 in dieser Straße gedenken und weiterhin an die Bedeutsamkeit von Kunst und Literatur erinnern. Bei der Konzeption meines Buches ging es mir einerseits darum, konkreten Bezug zu der Straße der Buchhändler in Bagdad herzustellen und andererseits von vielen Menschen der Welt, unabhängig von der Sprache, die sie sprechen, voll verstanden zu werden. Durch die Verwendung des Namens jenes berühmten irakischen Dichters, dessen Name diese Straße trägt, bot sich die Form des Leporellos förmlich an. Passend zu dem Leben in der al-Mutanabbi Straße wählte ich einen lebendig strukturierten Untergrund. Gedruckt wurde dieser als Lithografie mit der Handpresse. Die weiteren Teile wurden im Buchdruck mit Bleilettern auf einer Handandruckpresse in mehreren Druckvorgängen angefertigt. Hauptgestaltungselemente sind die großen roten Lettern des Namens von al-Mutanabbi. Darüber sowie darunter gedruckt weise ich auf das Besondere dieser Straße in Bagdad hin, auf das Kaufen, Verkaufen und Tauschen von Büchern, indem ich das Wort „Buch“ in vielen verschiedenen Sprachen und mit unterschiedlichen Schriftarten und in vielen Schriftgrößen als Hintergrundelement druckte. Die von mir passend zu den einzelnen Buchstaben gewählten Schriftsteller aus aller Welt sollen den Betrachter des Buches an dessen Bücher erinnern. Sie stehen stellvertretend für alle anderen nicht genannten Schriftsteller.
