Suzanne Sawyer, Down Home Girl Studio, Alabama, USA, 2012 To Make You See contains quotes of Joseph Conrad, English novelist of Polish descent (b. 1857- d. 1921), and Lucius Annaes Seneca, Roman philosopher (circa 4 BC - AD 65). Conrad remarked on the power of the written word to invoke awareness and Seneca remarked on the search for meaning as well as grieving, or allowing tears to fall, as a method for finding inner peace. The quotes overlay a map of Baghdad including the Al-Mutanabbi Street area and were chosen for their connection to the importance of books and reading as common ground for all people as well as to highlight Seneca's advice to allow ourselves to grieve as a method for achieving harmony as opposed to conjuring violence. Edition size: 30; Dimensions: 7 1/4”W x 3 3/4”H x 3/8”D; Materials: This is a one-page book using a map fold and case construction. It was letterpress printed using photopolymer plates on handmade Alphabet paper by Cave Paper. It was designed, printed, and bound by Suzanne Sawyer of Down Home Girl Studio. Suzanne Sawyer is currently a MFA candidate in Book Arts at The University of Alabama. A native of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Suzanne holds a BSW and a BFA in Art Education from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. She taught high school art for 11 years before coming to the University of Alabama. In her work, she explores themes of duality, identity, and anonymity through sculpture, handmade paper, books, drawings, letterpress printing, and printmaking.
