LOST and FOUND 2011
Maria G Pisano, USA
Statement: LOST
and FOUND reflects on the history of the Middle East. Symbolic
fragments were collected and reassembled with historical text and
maps, to illustrate the rich cultural heritage of the area. The
book hopes to raise awareness to the loss of lives, cultural property
and the freedom to openly share and discuss ideas, by the bombing
of Al-Mutanabbi Street on March 5, 2007, in Baghdad; a street of
booksellers, named after the 10th Century Arab poet Abu'
Tayib al-Mutanbbi
.
Maria G. Pisano's oeuvre encompasses prints,
works on paper and artists' books, published under the Memory
Press imprint. In 2012 she will deliver a lecture in Toronto
at the ARLIS conference and in July 2012 she is curating the exhibition
“Book as Witness: The Artist's Response”
at the Center for Book Arts in NYC. Memory Press
book works are in numerous private and public collections including
the Library of Congress, The University of Connecticut, University
of Delaware, The New York Public Library, and Stanford University.
She teaches book arts, papermaking, printmaking, and conservation
and is an adjunct Professor at Rosemont College in PA. |
