My bookmarks express the relationship between the imagination of the Author and the imagination of the Reader. The Author, represented by the black proto-text, endeavours to format his or her thoughts within a structured framework, i.e. the pages of a book. The Reader represented by the colour red, embarks on a journey through these thoughts, stopping and starting at will, marking each milestone, with a bookmark.
That the printed marks are not solid lines, rather a series of linked spaces, expresses the opportunity a Reader takes to explore their own imaginings in relation to the text. They represent the freedom of insight that this pause for thought, this transfer of knowledge can bring. They are the light bulb moments, the energy of change.
When the edition of bookmarks is viewed as a whole, this relationship between the two individuals, the two energies, is expressed as a wave. The wave envelope is a dynamic shape that links the individual bookmarks together.
My bookmarks are inspired by the woodblock prints of Buddhist sutras and other ancient Chinese texts. The complete design is produced by using several different stamps and overprinting.
