Karen Joyce

I find increasingly that I have an urge to use trees as symbols of significant places or events – this one, a lovely few days in Cumbria; that one (a magnificent copper beech, if you’re interested), my primary schooling and by extension my childhood, and so on. The tree on the bookmark is for a children’s author whom I consider the first person to introduce me to the absolute rootedness of a landscape, how it can be not only utterly essential to a story and the most important element of it, but also have no need of the story because it is so wholly itself. Malcolm Saville's Shropshire, anyone?
