One Hundred Hidden Haiku
Martha Lea, UK
Each sealed envelope bookmark contains an interpretation of a haiku about rain, mulberry leaves and silkworms by Matsuo Basho (1644-94). The haiku are illustrated with a mulberry leaf pattern, printed by hand using a stamp pad and a design cut from an eraser. Various papers were used, some are very fragile, and semi-transparent. Writing one hundred haiku produced variations in my interpretations. Some stick to the 5/7/5 syllable principle, others are more playful, but each haiku keeps the original images of rain, mulberries and silkworms.

These bookmarks combine things I love: mulberries, haiku, rain, secrets, sealing wax, letters, printmaking, insects - and of course, bookmarks.
